Program

We all have potential from the moment we are conceived, regardless of how, when, and where.  We all have specific unique skills and abilities that are a part of what and who we are as a person, whether we realize it or not.  How do we know and understand who we are and our abilities, let alone reach or grasp our potential?  As human beings, it is a part of our nature, the desire to learn, grow, seek, and understand.  However, most of us fall into and end up in routines, most often of necessity than desire, without even realizing it. Busyness, routines, and habits take over our lives and can sometimes overwhelm us.  The days can turn into weeks, the weeks into months, and months into years, yet we still feel as if something is unresolved or missing from a part of who and what we are.  If we let them in time, these feelings can and will get buried deep within our subconscious, often left there for a lifetime, or we attempt to ignore or dismiss these feelings completely.  Yet, we still feel empty or void, as if something is missing from us and our lives.

The great medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas asserts that all living things have potential or exist in constant potentiality.  All living things have skills, sort-a-speak, nature, and essence that make them what they are and can do.  When an acorn falls to the ground, it is but a seed with nothing more than potential.  If it falls on good soil and gets ample sun and water, it will grow into an oak tree; it may get eaten by a squirrel, picked up and used for decoration, or may just end up rotting into the dirt.  Regardless of what happens to the acorn, it is made for and has the potential to be an oak tree.  When something becomes what it is meant to be, Aquinas calls that potentiality realized or actualized, meaning it has become what it has the ability and nature to become.
